Carrizo Picture Cabinet

The Carrizo Picture Cabinet is a unique-edition oak cabinet that blends fine art with functional design. At the heart of the Carrizo Picture Cabinet are a pair of cabinet doors featuring original landscape artwork by Jean Pelle. The doors are paneled with a 48″x48″ tiled oil pastel drawing that captures the Carrizo Plain in central California—a remote, expansive preserve known for its stunning natural light and undulating topography.

The landscape artwork is not only an aesthetic centerpiece but also an integral part of the cabinet’s design. Using a distinctive technique in which oil pastels are thickly applied directly onto wood board panels, Jean created a process of layering and scratching away at the surface in which colors are gradually revealed, resulting in a textured effect that invites viewers to engage with the work in a tactile and intimate way.
