Pelle Presents ‘Lines, Squares & Painterly Light’ Exhibition | NYCxDESIGN 2025 May 13-21

Jean and Oliver Pelle of PELLE present Lines, Squares and Painterly Light, an exhibition of 24 new works spanning a diverse range of mediums, materials, and methods. These pieces form a continuous yet experimental body of work that reflects the studio’s evolving creative process.

PELLE’s May exhibition picks up an ongoing conversation and centers on seemingly isolated acts in the studio—drawing, painting, and form-making. What began as the process behind the work has now become the work itself.

The Schema Tables are a study on conformity and eccentricity. Inscribed within nine squares, each table undergoes a unique and irregular transformation, executed with surgical precision. Polished Nero Marquina marble squares are excised; hand-finished stainless steel planes resectioned—to resist their orthogonal outlines. To heighten the juxtaposition of order and disorder, the stone and steel are altered together and independently to create nine, layered rebellious compositions.

Lit Paintings capture a sacred, fleeting quality of light—incandescent and transcendent. The sun and moon are our idols; we have always looked up in wonder and awe. These works reflect a longing to remain forever in their glow. Original oil pastel paintings by Jean Pelle are encased in solid bronze frames and gently spotlit with a miniature LED to heighten the effect. Titles include Sunlit (40×30), Moonlit (24×30), and Skylit (24×30).

1x2x3 Furniture transforms linework into material. The profusion of lines – they multiply, repeat, turn, and intersect – puzzling together into a meticulous construction of solid teak wood furniture. A sculptural pair of distinct armchairs and a bench—each piece durable for indoor and outdoor use—embody functional form as visual language.

Linework is a series of six pencil drawings by Oliver Pelle. The manual, tactile act of drawing by hand is a way to direct the eye. The line is the beginning and the material equivalent of seeing as hand and sight are intrinsically linked. As they move across the paper, the lines carry energizing motion, flitting across the surface to form thin delicate webs, translating from two dimensions into three.

The Overlong Bubble Chandelier debuts  as the most intricate evolution of PELLE’s signature Bubble Chandelier. Conceived as a sweeping, two-part draped necklace of glass globes, this large-scale fixture becomes a canvas for an entire painting rendered in the new Painterly Strokes style. Meandering along the wall, it vibrates with color and light, offering a dynamic interplay between illumination and visual art.

Helm Oblique Ring Chandelier and Helm Oblique Table Lamp extends the HELM collection with bold new forms. Featuring distinct oblique angles and seamless corners, these pieces retain the sculptural essence of the originals while embracing a more polished refinement. First introduced in 2024, the HELM series—crafted in solid aluminum—also includes the Pendant 3, Pendant 4, Reading Lamp, and Sconce, each showcasing signature welded joints and a strong geometric presence.
