“Desert Land” is the latest exploration of the Nana Lure Lamps. This new work introduces a painted landscape onto the interior surface of the Nana Lure Lamp. The exterior of the lamp is also hand-painted, but in the dark, rich tones of the California landscape – Sun-burnt umber, yellow ochre, greens and chartreuse that tie these colors back to the brown sepia inks of its interior.
Inspired by the artistic traditions of East Asian landscape paintings, Jean Pelle depicts an imaginary desert scene based on early memories of growing up and exploring the Southern California wilderness.
