We designed a new collection of lights for West Elm. This collection is the brand’s largest lighting collaboration and ranges from wall sconces, tables lamps and a chandelier. You can view the entire collection online and in West Elm’s store locations.
When West Elm approached us to design some lighting pieces for them, we saw it as a real opportunity to work outside of how we would typically design and manufacture lighting in our own studio. In some respects, it really freed us to create work that we normally would not do on our own due to prototyping costs and manufacturing capabilities.
We started by looking within West Elm and we were immediately drawn to the salt-blasted glass used in a line of colorful glass vases. The glass came across as being different from the frosted and sandblasted technique we are used to seeing in the lighting industry. The salt-blasted texture is rougher and the stippling on the surface goes deeper – truly unique. You can also see the texture when the glass is illuminated from within. The light that is given off has an elegant and luxurious quality to it due to this glass.
We knew we wanted to play with this series. We wanted to have fun with the designs and even “cut loose”. With West Elm, we experimented with a lot of asymmetry and incorporated some unusual proportions. We also brought in historical elements which we typically don’t do much of, such as a play on some classic chandelier forms. We think people will pick up on that and enjoy that sense of whimsy in them. These are modern lighting pieces that exist in the present but they also nod a bit to the past.
